Communication Strategies to Create Authentic Understanding

By on July 20, 2014

George Bernard Shaw said, “The biggest challenge in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”

When communicating with another person, do not assume that you know what they mean. Instead ask questions to more clearly understand their perspective and map of the world.

Here are a few powerful questions that you can ask to more clearly understand another’s mindscape:

• How so?
• How do you mean?
• I’m wondering what specifically do you mean by ________________?
• I’m curious what do you see in your mind when you say ___________?

Then listen intently. Notice the response you get. Brilliant communicators notice subtle changes in the physiology of the person whom they are communicating with.

Does the person lean forward or pull back?
Does their breathing get deeper or shallower?

When you pay attention, you can enter another’s map of the world and see from his or her point of view. This helps you create the conditions for genuine understanding.

Enjoy practicing this lesson. And feel free to share it with everyone you know.

To your success, and with Supreme LOVE,
